1. Stability analysis and control design of spatially developing flows
Sammanfattning : Methods in hydrodynamic stability, systems and control theory are applied to spatially developing flows, where the flow is not required to vary slowly in the streamwise direction. A substantial part of the thesis presents a theoretical framework for the stability analysis, input-output behavior, model reduction and control design for fluid dynamical systems using examples on the linear complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. 2. Equilibrium and Kinetic Batch Studies of Cadmium and Lead sorption using Low Cost Biosorbents
Sammanfattning : Agricultural wastes; Albizia coriaria, Coffea canephora, Cyperus papyrus, Erythrina abyssinica and Musa spp were evaluated for uptake of aqueous Cd2+ and Pb2+ ions in single- and binary-component solutions. Untreated, base-treated and peroxide-treated biomasses were employed in batch studies. LÄS MER
3. Phosphorus recycling from wastewater to agriculture using reactive filter media
Sammanfattning : This thesis focused on testing the suitability of reactive filter media used for phosphorus (P) removal from wastewater as fertilizers, thus recycling P to agriculture. The work compared the P sorption capacity of several materials in order to assess their suitability as a source of P for plants. LÄS MER
4. Remediation of materials with mixed contaminants : treatability, technology and final disposal
Sammanfattning : Contaminated soils are a large issue worldwide and much effort has been made to find efficient remediation methods. At many contaminated sites, mixtures of different contaminants with different properties are present, which may lead to additional problems, and thus additional costs, during the remediation process. 5. Characterization of aluminum in environmental systems using X-ray absorption and vibrational spectroscopy : The importance of organic matter
Sammanfattning : The fate and behavior of many metals in the environment are highly dependent on interactions with natural organic matter (NOM), which is abundant in most soils and surface waters. The complexation with NOM can influence the speciation of the metals by affecting their hydrolysis and solubility. LÄS MER
