1. Endogenous Type I Interferon Inducers in Systemic Autoimmune Diseases
Sammanfattning : Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have elevated levels of interferon (IFN)-α in blood and IFN-α-producing cells in tissues. In the present thesis, we investigate the mechanisms behind the upregulated IFN-α-production in SLE and also show that the IFN-α system is activated in primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS), with IFN-α-producing cells in the major affected organ, the salivary glands. 2. Solubility and Surface Complexation Studies of Apatites
Sammanfattning : Apatites are a diverse class of phosphate minerals that are important in a great variety of natural and industrial processes. They are, for example, used as raw material in fertiliser production and in the remediation of metal-contaminated soils. LÄS MER
3. Bed filters for phosphorus removal in on-site wastewater treatment : Removal mechanisms and sustainability
Sammanfattning : For many surface waters, phosphorus (P) leaching is a serious problem that should be minimized to prevent eutrophication. In Sweden there is a demand for physical and technical development of high-performance P removal techniques to reduce phosphorus leaching from on-site wastewater treatment systems to the Baltic Sea. 4. Characterization of aluminum in environmental systems using X-ray absorption and vibrational spectroscopy : The importance of organic matter
Sammanfattning : The fate and behavior of many metals in the environment are highly dependent on interactions with natural organic matter (NOM), which is abundant in most soils and surface waters. The complexation with NOM can influence the speciation of the metals by affecting their hydrolysis and solubility. LÄS MER
5. Phase transformation and surface chemistry of secondary iron minerals formed from acid mine drainage
Sammanfattning : The mining of sulphidic ore to extract metals such as zinc and copper produces huge quantities of waste material. The weathering and oxidation of the waste produces what is commonly known as Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), a dilute sulphuric acid rich in Fe(II) and heavy metals. LÄS MER
