  1. 11. Steroids and bile acids in intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy : effects of treatment with ursodeoxycholic acid

    Författare :Ling-Jie Meng; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : A method permitting simultaneous analysis of individual steroid hormone metabolites and bile acids in different forms of conjugation in serum and urine was established. Total bile acids and neutral steroids were extracted from human serum or urine with octadecylsilane-bonded silica, separated into different groups of conjugates by anion-exchange chromatography and analyzed by fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry. 2. 12. Exposure to inorganic arsenic in pregnancy and metabolism-nutrition interaction

    Författare :Li Li; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Inorganic arsenic is metabolized by most mammals, including humans, via alternating reduction and oxidative methylation with S-adenosylmethionine as main methyl donor. Thus, it seems likely that it is influenced by the availability of methyl groups. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Occupational heat exposure and kidney disease - Studies on the role of heat stress in the Mesoamerican epidemic of Chronic Kidney Disease of non-traditional origin

    Författare :Erik Hansson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Heat stress; heat strain; chronic kidney disease; acute kidney injury; occupational medicine;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the association between heat stress and kidney disease in Mesoamerica using different perspectives and methods. An ecologic study found that hot, sugarcane-cultivating regions had elevated chronic kidney disease (CKD) mortality. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Bone and kidney effects from cadmium exposure : dose effect and dose response relationships

    Författare :Tobias Alfvén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Bone; bone mineral density; cadmium; epidemiology; environmental exposure; fractures; heavy metals; human; kidneys; occupationally exposure; osteoporosis; protein HC; tubular proteinuria;

    Sammanfattning : Cadmium is a heavy metal that has been dispersed in the environment during the last century due to human activity. It is well known that high cadmium exposure causes renal damage and in severe cases also osteoporosis and osteomalacia. Osteoporosis is a major cause of morbidity worldwide. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Quantification of inflammatory mediators to explore molecular mechanisms and sub-phenotypes of asthma

    Författare :Johan Kolmert; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis summarizes a series of studies using liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry methodologies to quantify metabolites of fatty acids (i.e. LÄS MER
