11. Endotoxin-induced inflammation in healthy human airways
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the innate immune response in healthy human airways in vivo after simulation of a Gram-negative infection. Intrabronchial exposure to the TLR4 agonist endotoxin was used as a model for the innate mechanisms in the immune response that are caused by cigarette smoke and by natural infection with Gram-negative bacteria. 12. Pulmonary manifestations in smoking-related diseases : clinical studies with emphasis on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and rheumatoid arthritis
Sammanfattning : Smoking is a risk factor for a number of diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Cigarette smoke initiates an inflammatory response which leads to structural changes in the airways and in the lung parenchyma. LÄS MER
13. Activation of epithelial signal transduction pathways, cytokine production and airway inflammation following diesel exhaust exposure
Sammanfattning : Adverse health effects of ambient air pollution are well recognised and include increased morbidity and mortality in respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Diesel engines are major contributors to ambient particulate matter pollution and diesel particles have been shown to have strong toxicological and oxidative properties. LÄS MER
14. Molecular and epidemiological investigations of lung involvement in very early rheumatoid arthritis
Sammanfattning : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic inflammatory joint disease with at least two distinct clinical phenotypes defined by the presence or absence of antibodies, i.e. rheumatoid factor (RF) and/or anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPAs). LÄS MER
15. Airway inflammation in "healthy" smokers. Relation to lung function and high resolution CT findings
Sammanfattning : The aim of the present study was to characterize the inflammatory pattern in "healthy"smokers and relate it to lung function, high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) findings and respiratory symptoms in order to identify smokers at risk to develop COPD. Subjects were recruited from a population study "Men born 1933 in Göteborg". LÄS MER
