1. Plant biology through quantitative proteomics
Sammanfattning : Over the last decade the field of mass spectrometry based proteomics has advanced from qualitative, analyses leading to publications revolving around lists of identified proteins and peptides, to addressing more biologically relevant issues requiring measurement of the abundance of identified proteins and hence quantitive mass spectrometry. The work described in this thesis addresses problems with quantitive proteomics in plant sciences, particularly complications caused by the complexity of plant proteomes (generated by genomic duplications), which makes mass spectrometry-based based proteomic analyses more difficult than in mammalian species. 2. From single-molecule sensing to extracellular vesicles in glioma cells under stress
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the work I conducted in two different areas, namely biomolecular sensing and quantitative cell biology. The work in the former area was focused on the optimization of plasmonic metamaterials for sensing applications, and in the latter on the characterization of extracellular vesicles released by glioblastoma cells under stress conditions. 3. Constraint-based modeling of metabolism - interpreting predictions of growth and ATP synthesis in human and yeast
Sammanfattning : Growth is the primary objective of the cell. Diseases arise when cells diverge from a healthy growth-pattern. An increased understanding of cellular growth may thus be translated into improved human health. The cell requires materials and free energy (in the form of ATP) in order to grow, metabolism supplies the cell with this. LÄS MER
4. Model-Based Hypothesis Testing in Biomedicine : How Systems Biology Can Drive the Growth of Scientific Knowledge
Sammanfattning : The utilization of mathematical tools within biology and medicine has traditionally been less widespread compared to other hard sciences, such as physics and chemistry. However, an increased need for tools such as data processing, bioinformatics, statistics, and mathematical modeling, have emerged due to advancements during the last decades. LÄS MER
