  1. 1. Uncoupling Proteins : Regulation by IGF-1 and Neuroprotection during Hyperglycemia in Vitro

    Författare :Helena Gustafsson; Anna Forsby; David Tomlinson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; uncoupling protein; oxidative stress; diabetes; neuropathy; SH-SY5Y; Neurobiology; Neurobiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Diabetic neuropathy is believed to arise due to oxidative stress following hyperglycemic situations. Uncoupling proteins (UCPs) constitute a subgroup of mitochondrial transporter proteins with putative antioxidant properties. LÄS MER

  2. 2. The Role of Mitochondrial Uncoupling in the Development of Diabetic Nephropathy

    Författare :Malou Friederich Persson; Fredrik Palm; Richard K. Porter; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Kidney; mitochondria; Uncoupling Protein-2; Adenosine Nucleotide Transporter; uncoupling; diabetes; diabetic nephropathy; db db; dinitrophenol; Coenzyme Q10; oxygen; rats; mice; Physiology; Fysiologi; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Diabetes is closely associated with increased oxidative stress, especially originating from the mitochondria. A mechanism to reduce increased mitochondria superoxide production is to reduce the mitochondria membrane potential by releasing protons across the mitochondria membrane. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Mitochondrial function in human skeletal muscle: with special reference to exercise and training

    Författare :Michail Tonkonogi; Högskolan Dalarna; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :aerobic metabolism; oxidative phosphorylation; mitochondria; oxygen utilisation; citrate synthase; ADP sensitivity; ATP; muscle fibres; hydrogen ions; lactate; free radicals; proton leak; uncoupling; exercise; aerobic metabolism; oxidative phosphorylation; mitochondria; oxygen utilisation; citrate synthase; ADP sensitivity; ATP; muscle fibres; hydrogen ions; lactate; free radicals; proton leak; uncoupling; exercise;

    Sammanfattning : The overall objective of this thesis was to study the adaptation of oxidative function in human skeletal muscle to acute exercise of different modes, intensities and durations, and to endurance training. The effects of endurance training on mitochondrial function were evaluated in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies by measurements of mitochondrial oxygen consumption in isolated mitochondria and permeabilised muscle fibres and measurements of mitochondrial ATP production rate in isolated mitochondria. 4. 4. Experimental studies of proton translocation reactions in biological systems : Electrogenic events in heme-copper oxidases

    Författare :Håkan Lepp; Peter Brzezinski; Thomas Nilsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; heme-copper oxidase; cytochrome c oxidase; nitric oxide reductase; cbb3-type oxidase; proton pumping; uncoupling; charge-transfer; electrogenic event; flow-flash; Biophysics; Biofysik; Biophysics; biofysik;

    Sammanfattning : Terminal heme-copper oxidases (HCuOs) are transmembrane proteins that catalyze the final step in the respiratory chain - the reduction of O2 to H2O, coupled to energy conservation by generation of an electrochemical proton gradient. The most extensively investigated of the HCuOs are the aa3-type oxidases, to which cytochrome c oxidase (CytcO) belongs, which uses energy released in the O2-reduction for proton pumping. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Constraint-based modeling of metabolism - interpreting predictions of growth and ATP synthesis in human and yeast

    Författare :Avlant Nilsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; the Crabtree effect; enzyme-constraints; stunting; cellular economy; the Warburg effect; uncoupling; tumor; flux balance analysis; lactate threshold; metabolite depletion;

    Sammanfattning : Growth is the primary objective of the cell. Diseases arise when cells diverge from a healthy growth-pattern. An increased understanding of cellular growth may thus be translated into improved human health. The cell requires materials and free energy (in the form of ATP) in order to grow, metabolism supplies the cell with this. LÄS MER
