6. α-Synuclein Fibril Formation and the Effects of Lipid Membranes
Sammanfattning : Amyloid protein aggregation results in major disturbances of cellular processes in humans. The most common amyloid-related disorders are Alzheimer´s disease and Parkinson´s disease. Parkinson´s disease is charaterized by the formation of protein-rich aggregates that are deposited in neurons, termed Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites. LÄS MER
7. α-synuclein interactions with lipid membranes
Sammanfattning : α-synuclein is an intrinsically disordered protein implicated in synaptic vesicle trafficking at the synapse. Accumulation of α-synuclein in the form of amyloid deposits coincides with the loss of dopaminergic neurons in Parkinsons disease. LÄS MER
8. Equilibrium and Kinetic Studies of the Binding of DNA to Cationic Liposomes
Sammanfattning : The objective of this work was to study the formation of DNA-cationic vesicle complexes (lipoplexes). These complexes are interesting not only from a fundamental point of view but also as promising candidates for gene therapy. The approach taken was to study first the cationic vesicles by themselves. 9. Amyloid Proteins in Neurodegenerative Disease – Role of Extrinsic Modifiers
Sammanfattning : ABSTRACT Self-assembly of disease-associated proteins into fibrillar homopolymers, so-called “amyloid fibrils” is a pathological hallmark of several debilitating human disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD). AD and PD are associated with the formation of amyloid fibrils from the proteins amyloid-β (Aβ) and α-syn (α-syn), in the extracellular and intracellular space, respectively. LÄS MER
10. Formation of Block Copolymer and Surfactant Vesicles
Sammanfattning : In this thesis temperature induced vesicle formation in both a block copolymer system and nonionic surfactant system have been investigated. The block copolymer is a triblock copolymer of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(propylene oxide) (PPO), PEO-PPO-PEO, with the average molecular composition of EO5PO68EO5 and the commercial trade name Pluronic L121 (papers I, II).
