1. Development of Automated Algorithms for Epicardial Adipose Tissue Analysis in Computed Tomography and their Application in Population Based Research
Sammanfattning : The epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), which surrounds the heart and is separated from other tissues only by the thin layers of the pericardium, has enjoyed intense research for the past decades. Increased inflammatory activity in the EAT in coronary artery disease has, together with associated volumetric expansion of the EAT and changes in its radiodensity supported theories that the EAT might play a role in the pathogenesis of coronary atherosclerosis or mirror its progression better than traditional risk factors. 2. Retinopathy in subjects with pre-diabetes and electrophysiological studies in diabetes patients with and without retinopathy
Sammanfattning : Diabetes is increasing worldwide and hence the risk developing complications where retinopathy is the theme of this study. The aim of the study was to evaluate the presence of (vascular) retinopathy in subjects with the pre-diabetes stage, impaired fasting glucose (IFG), and the development of retinopathy in these subjects during five years. 3. Factors potentially influencing pathogenetic mechanisms and hyperglycemia in pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes : clinical studies in humans
Sammanfattning : The pathogenetic mechanisms underlying type 2 diabetes (T2D) and prediabetes involve an interaction between β-cell dysfunction and insulin resistance (IR). The resulting hyperglycemia, as well as other clustered cardiovascular (CV) risk factors in T2D, constitutes a severe hazard for development of complications to the disease. LÄS MER
4. Self-management of type 2 diabetes : processes for setting up a diabetes and pre-diabetes support intervention in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities in Sweden
Sammanfattning : Background: Type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes are major public health challenges, disproportionately affecting disadvantaged populations worldwide. The high burden of Type 2 diabetes (T2D) contributes significantly to disability, reduced quality of life, and increased use of health care services, impacting heavily on both individuals and health systems. 5. Epidemiological studies on type 2 diabetes : assessment of diabetes risk factors and study participation
Sammanfattning : Type 2 diabetes is a disease with increasing prevalence. Better knowledge of risk factors may form the bases for specific interventions and preventive measures. The aim of this thesis was to contribute to the knowledge on type 2 diabetes, by examining family history of diabetes and other risk factors with emphasis on psychological exposures. LÄS MER
