36. Resistin is a modulator of inflammation and autoimmunity
Sammanfattning : Resistin is a protein with proinflammatory properties in man and a regulator of glucose metabolism in mice. Human resistin activates the nuclear factor kappa-B dependent cytokine cascade; however, its full role in inflammation in terms of regulation, expression, and cellular source is not entirely understood. 37. Immunopathogenesis of relapsing fever borreliosis
Sammanfattning : Relapsing fever (RF) is caused by different species of Borrelia transmitted by soft ticks or by the human body louse. Illness is characterized by reappearing peaks of high concentrations of spirochetes in blood, concordant with fever peaks separated by asymptomatic periods. LÄS MER
38. Dissemination of Toxoplasma gondii to the central nervous system : with special reference to in vivo bioluminescence imaging
Sammanfattning : Toxoplasma gondii causes an asymtomatic chronic infection in immune competent individuals that can be life-threatening in individuals that become immuno-compromised or to the developing fetus. This thesis aimed to (1) establish a novel murine model to study acute and reactivated toxoplasmosis in real-time using in vivo bioluminescence imaging (BLI), (2) investigate the migratory pathways utilized by Toxoplasma for systemic dissemination, especially to the central nervous system (CNS) and (3) address the role of resident brain glia cells in the setting of recrudescent infection in mice. 39. Coastal Overwash: Processes and Modelling
Sammanfattning : Overwash is the flow of water and sediment over the crest of a beach system when the runup level of waves or the water level, often enhanced by storm surge, exceeds the local beach or dune crest height. The impacts of overwash on coastal barriers or low lying mainland coasts are striking. LÄS MER
40. Water in roads: Flow paths and pollutant spread
Sammanfattning : For better road construction and maintenance while minimising damage to the environment and groundwater, it is essential to monitor and model hydrological impacts on roads and consider pollution of groundwater. Water content in unbound material in road layers changes continuously and water flow usually occurs along pathways that are the main corridors for pollutant spread to groundwater. LÄS MER
