1. Effects of joint cocaine and ethanol on the brain opioid systems
Sammanfattning : Concurrent abuse of cocaine and alcohol is common among human addicts, where 85% of all cocaine users have also been shown to meet the criteria for alcohol dependence. Concurrent abuse of cocaine and alcohol is associated with a more severe dependence and a more pronounced abstinence than using either drug alone. LÄS MER
2. Quantitative influence of exogenous androgens on serum lipid profile and endocrine functions
Sammanfattning : Anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) in doping have been a concern predominantly in sports. The focus has now switched to the doping in the society which is a significant problem for the public health. The abuse of AAS is associated with mental and somatic side effects and with the use of several other drugs including narcotics. LÄS MER
3. Conditional and non-conditional reward-related responses to alcohol. Nicotinic mechanisms
Sammanfattning : The mesolimbic dopamine system is believed to mediate the positive reinforcing and rewarding effects of addictive drugs by increasing dopamine levels in its terminal area, the nucleus accumbens (nAc). Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) within this system appear important for the pharmacological actions of both alcohol and nicotine, which may explain the frequent co-abuse of these two drugs. 4. Testosterone Use and Abuse : Methodological Aspects in Forensic Toxicology and Clinical Diagnostics
Sammanfattning : Abuse of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) is widespread in society and is today a major public health problem, associated with mental and somatic adverse effects and risk behavior, such as use of other illicit drugs and criminality. Testosterone, the most important endogenous male androgen, is therapeutically used in replacement therapy but is also extensively used as a doping agent. LÄS MER
5. Nicotinic mechanisms in ethanol reinforcement. A neurochemical and behavioral study
Sammanfattning : Both smoking and alcohol consumption are known to cause severe health problems and there is an extensive co-abuse of tobacco and ethanol. The reinforcing properties of drugs of abuse may involve the brain mesolimbic dopamine system, that originates in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and projects mainly to the nucleus accumbens. LÄS MER
