  1. 16. Spread and distribution of drug resistance and compensatory mutations in Plasmodium falciparum

    Författare :Irina Tatiana Jovel Quiñonez Dalmau; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : In 2010 there were an estimated 216 million cases of malaria worldwide. In Honduras there were ~9000 cases of which 88% were due to Plasmodium vivax mono-infection. Chloroquine (CQ) resistant Plasmodium falciparum have spread throughout the world curtailing its use. LÄS MER

  2. 17. Molecular diagnosis of drug resistance in Plasmodium falciparum and virulence factors in Entamoeba histolytica

    Författare :Sherwan Zindrou; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Plasmodium falciparum; dhfr gene; pyrimethamine; cycloguanil; mutations; Polymerase chain reaction; Entamoeba histolytica; hemolysins; hemolysis; virulence factors.;

    Sammanfattning : Four species of the protozoan parasite genus Plasmodium are known to infect man. Plasmodium falciparum, the most virulent species is increasingly associated with resistance to antimalarial drugs. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Managing childhood malaria in rural Tanzania : focusing on drug use and resistance

    Författare :Jaran Eriksen; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Malaria; Policy change; Sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine; Chloroquine; Tanzania; Health workers; Drug resistance;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Malaria is a leading cause of death in underfive children in Africa. Due to the spread of chloroquine (CQ) resistance, sub-Saharan African countries such as Tanzania have changed their malaria treatment policies. In 2001 Tanzania replaced CQ with sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine (SP) as first line malaria treatment. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Treatment of uncomplicated malaria in Guinea-Bissau

    Författare :Paul Erik Kofoed; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Chloroquine; sulphadoxine; pyrimethamine; amodiaquine; quinine; artemisinine; malaria; children; Guinea-Bissau; efficacy; effectiveness.;

    Sammanfattning : Treatment of malaria has become increasingly difficult due to high levels of resistance to the cheap and commonly used antimalarials. In Guinea-Bissau, the first line drug is chloroquine (CQ), the second line drug is sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (S/P), and the third line therapy is quinine (QU). LÄS MER
