11. Towards a Chemisorption Model for Transition-Metal Nitrides and Carbides from Density-Functional Theory: A TiN and TiC Case Study
Sammanfattning : Since the 1960's, a number of models for chemisorption on metals has beenpresented, most notably the Anderson-Grimley-Newns model for metals and thed-band model of Hammer and Nørskov for transition metals. The intention of this thesis is to explore the adsorption on transition-metal nitrides andcarbides, technologically interesting materials (in, e. LÄS MER
12. Aberration-Corrected Analytical Electron Microscopy of Transition Metal Nitride and Silicon Nitride Multilayers
Sammanfattning : Two multilayer thin films have been studied: TiN/SiNx and ZrN/SiNx. A double-corrected transmission electron microscope (TEM) was utilized for imaging and spectroscopy. Imaging was carried out in scanning mode (STEM) for all samples. LÄS MER
13. Thin metal films on weakly-interacting substrates : Nanoscale growth dynamics, stress generation, and morphology manipulation
Sammanfattning : Vapor-based growth of thin metal films with controlled morphology on weakly-interacting substrates (WIS), including oxides and van der Waals materials, is essential for the fabrication of multifunctional metal contacts in a wide array of optoelectronic devices. Achieving this entails a great challenge, since weak film/substrate interactions yield a pronounced and uncontrolled 3D morphology. LÄS MER
14. Adsorption of surface active elements on the iron (100) surface : A study based on ab initio calculations
Sammanfattning : In the present work, the structural, electronic properties, thermodynamic stability and adatom surface movements of oxygen and sulfur adsorption on the Fe surface were studied based on the ab initio method. Firstly, the oxygen adsorbed on the iron (100) surface is investigated at the three adsorption sites top, bridge and hollow sites, respectively. LÄS MER
15. Toward Energy-efficient Physical Vapor Deposition : Routes for Replacing Substrate Heating during Magnetron Sputtering by Employing Metal Ion Irradiation
Sammanfattning : In this Thesis, magnetron sputtering is perfected as an environmental-friendly deposition technique. I performed systematic studies of a novel approach - hybrid high-power impulse and dc magnetron co-sputtering (HiPIMS/DCMS) with metal-ion-synchronized substrate bias pulses. LÄS MER
