11. Basal boundary conditions, stability and verification in glaciological numerical models
Sammanfattning : To increase our understanding of how ice sheets and glaciers interact with the climate system, numerical models have become an indispensable tool. However, the complexity of these systems and the natural limitation in computational power is reflected in the simplifications of the represented processes and the spatial and temporal resolution of the models. 12. Diffuse-Interface Simulations of Capillary Phenomena
Sammanfattning : Fluid flows mainly driven by capillary forces are presented in this thesis. By means of modeling and simulations, interesting dynamics in capillary-driven flows are revealed such as coalescences, breakups, precursor films, flow instabilities, rapid spreading, rigid body motions, and reactive wetting. 13. Magnetic fields of cool active stars
Sammanfattning : Magnetic fields are present throughout the universe and are very important for many astrophysical processes. Magnetic field influences a star throughout its life and affects nearby objects such as planets. LÄS MER
14. Robust preconditioning methods for algebraic problems, arising in multi-phase flow models
Sammanfattning : The aim of the project is to construct, analyse and implement fast and reliable numerical solution methods to simulate multi-phase flow, modeled by a coupled system consisting of the time-dependent Cahn-Hilliard and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with variable viscosity and variable density. This thesis mainly discusses the efficient solution methods for the latter equations aiming at constructing preconditioners, which are numerically and computationally efficient, and robust with respect to various problem, discretization and method parameters. 15. On some Numerical Methods and Solution Techniques for Incompressible Flow Problems
Sammanfattning : The focus of this work is on numerical solution methods for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, which consist of a set of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations. In general, after linearization and finite element discretization in space, the original nonlinear problem is converted into finding the solutions of a sequence of linear systems of equations.
