6. Post-translational modifications of myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein in CNS autoimmunity
Sammanfattning : Autoimmunity towards components of the central nervous system (CNS) is a driving factor of nerve demyelination in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The etiology of autoimmunity in MS pathogenesis remains elusive, but a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental triggers is theorized to initiate this complex disease. LÄS MER
7. Studies on glycosphingolipids in infection, immunity and differentiation
Sammanfattning : Cell surface glycoconjugates play a role in many biological processes such as responses to microbial infections, cell-cell interactions, differentiation, and inflammatory responses. The present work is focused on structural characterization of glycosphingolipids with potential roles in adhesion of Helicobacter pylori and Vibrio cholerae, differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells, and as blood group determinants. 8. The importance of major histocompatibility complex class II genes for the development of autoimmune inflammation
Sammanfattning : In this thesis the role of major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) class II molecules in development of autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), was studied. By combining an experimental model for RA, collagen type II induced arthritis (CIA), with molecular biology methods the importance of polymorphism in Mhc class II genes for disease development was investigated. 9. Positional identification and functional analysis of genes regulating autoimmune arthritis
Sammanfattning : The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is the most gene-dense and polymorphic region in the human genome with strong associations to many autoimmune disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, even the genetic association between MHC and RA was known more than 40 years ago, we still have not fully explained the functional roles of the MHC genes and identified the underlying specific polymorphisms.
