    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Magnetism; Magnetic anisotropy; DFT; Permanent magnets; Electron vortex beams; Electron microscopy; Electron scattering; Multislice methods; Magnetism; magnetisk anisotropi; permanentmagneter; täthetsfunktionalteori; elektronmikroskopi; elektronvirvelstrålar; elektronspridningsteori; Physics with spec. in Atomic; Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics; Fysik med inriktning mot atom- molekyl- och kondenserande materiens fysik;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, two selected topics in magnetism are studied using theoretical modelling and computational methods. The first of these is the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) of transition metal based magnets. In particular, ways of finding 3d transition metal based materials with large MAE are considered. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Theoretical Magnet Design : From the electronic structure of solid matter to new permanent magnets

    Författare :Alexander Edström; Jan Rusz; Olle Eriksson; Ingo Opahle; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics with spec. in Atomic; Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics; Fysik med inriktning mot atom- molekyl- och kondenserande materiens fysik;

    Sammanfattning : A good permanent magnet should possess a large saturation magnetisation (Ms), large mag- netocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) and a high Curie temperature (TC). A difficult but important challenge to overcome for a sustainable permanent magnet industry is to find novel magnetic materials, exhibiting a large MAE, without the use of scarcely available elements such as rare-earth metals. 3. 3. Theory and Modelling of Functional Materials

    Författare :Vancho Kocevski; Jan Rusz; Christophe Delerue; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nanocrystals; graphene; alloys; density functional theory; optical properties; electronic properties; core-shell structures; semiconductors;

    Sammanfattning : The diverse field of material research has been steadily expanding with a great help from computational physics, especially in the investigation of the fundamental properties of materials. This has driven the computational physics to become one of the main branches of physics, allowing for density functional theory (DFT) to develop as one of the cornerstones of material research. Sammanfattning : Ultrafast dynamical processes in magnetic systems have become the subject of intense research during the last two decades, initiated by the pioneering discovery of femtosecond laser-induced demagnetization in nickel. In this thesis, we develop theory for fast and ultrafast magnetization dynamics. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : The detection of weak signals in noisy data is a problem which occurs across various disciplines. Here, the signal of interest is the spectral signature of the electron magnetic chiral dichroism (EMCD) effect. LÄS MER
