  1. 6. Extending Microsystems to Very High Temperatures and Chemically Harsh Environments

    Författare :Zahra Khaji; Lena Klintberg; Klas Hjort; Greger Thornell; Frank Niklaus; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HTCC; MEMS; MST; Microcombustor; Microthruster; Single-use valve; Wireless pressure sensor; flow sensor; in-situ electroplating; Monopropellant; Platinum; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot mikrosystemteknik; Engineering Science with specialization in Microsystems Technology;

    Sammanfattning : Aiming at applications in space exploration as well as for monitoring natural hazards, this thesis focuses on understanding and overcoming the challenges of extending the applicability of microsystems to temperatures above 600°C as well as chemically harsh environments. Alumina and zirconia high-temperature co-fired ceramics (HTCC) with platinum as the conductor material, have in this thesis, been used to manufacture a wide range of high-temperature tolerant miniaturized sensors and actuators, including pressure and flow sensors, valves, a combustor, and liquid monopropellant microthrusters. 2. 7. Microsystem Interfaces for Space

    Författare :Hugo Nguyen; Greger Thornell; Johan Köhler; Staffan Greek; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Engineering physics; microelectromechanical system; interface; microfluidics; nanosatellite; space; microsystems; filter; valve; MST; MEMS; Teknisk fysik;

    Sammanfattning : Microsystem interfaces to the macroscopic surroundings and within the microsystems themselves are formidable challenges that this thesis makes an effort to overcome, specifically for enabling a spacecraft based entirely on microsystems. The NanoSpace-1 nanospacecraft is a full-fledged satellite design with mass below 10 kg. LÄS MER

  3. 8. High-Pressure Microfluidics

    Författare :Sam Ogden; Klas Hjort; Greger Thornell; Wouter van der Wijngaart; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :phase change; actuator; valve; pump; supercritical fluid; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot mikrosystemteknik; Engineering Science with specialization in Microsystems Technology;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, some fundamentals and possible applications of high-pressure microfluidics have been explored. Furthermore, handling fluids at high pressures has been addressed, specifically by creating and characterizing strong microvalves and pumps.A variety of microstructuring techniques was used to realize these microfluidic devices, e.g. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Development of Microcomponents for Attitude and Communication Systems on Small Vehicles in Space and Extreme Environments

    Författare :Kristoffer Palmer; Greger Thornell; Hugo Nguyen; Henrik Kratz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Administrative Law; Förvaltningsrätt;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, components intended for vehicles in space and other extreme environments have been realized using microsystems technology to facilitate miniaturized, yet high-performing systems beneficial for small spacecraft and other vehicles with limited size and power.Cold gas thrusters commonly used on spacecraft basically accelerate a gaseous propellant stored under high pressure.
