1. Fast pyrolysis of biomass : primary products and reaction pathways
Sammanfattning : Pyrolysis of biomass to produce liquid fuel and chemicals has been considered as an alternativeto fossil fuel because biomass has a lower environmental impact; moreover, it is renewable andcould be sustainable. However, the process of bio-oil production involves a series of complexchemical reactions which are dependent on the biomass feedstock and composition, temperature, heating rate as well as residence time. 2. Opportunities to broaden biomass feedstocks in thermochemical conversion technologies
Sammanfattning : Global environmental concerns are motivating a growing interest in broadening the biomass feedstock base in several energy sectors, including (i) the domestic heating sector, presently dominated by stem wood combustion, and (ii) biofuel production, presently dominated by edible crops. The objective of this thesis is to investigate new opportunities to broaden the biomass feedstock in thermochemical conversion technologies. LÄS MER
3. Optically pure lactic acid production from lignocellulosic biomass
Sammanfattning : Lactic acid is a platform chemical that can be used for many applications. More recently, optically pure lactic acid—L- or D-lactic acid enantiomers—have been used for the polymerisation to poly-lactic acid (PLA). LÄS MER
4. Mechanisms of Deposit formation in the Grate-kiln Process
Sammanfattning : Fly ash particles from the combustion of coal together with disintegrated particles arising from iron-ore pellets result in accumulation of deposits on the refractory linings of the grate-kiln induration machine during the iron-ore pelletizing process. Deposit formation gives rise to decreased production efficiency, unscheduled shutdowns, high cleaning costs, and equipment failures. LÄS MER
5. Influence of the properties of bio-coal as a substitute for fossil coal in carbon composite agglomerates and in coke
Sammanfattning : The iron-ore-based blast furnace (BF) process is still the most dominant method for producing metallic iron units for steelmaking, and the BF is also the main contributor to the 7-9% of global CO2 emissions which, according to World Steel Association, originate from the steel industry. The steel industry is aiming to reduce CO2 emissions by different means. LÄS MER
