1. Benthic fluxes of biogenic elements in the Baltic Sea : Influence of oxygen and macrofauna
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates how benthic fluxes of phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N), and silicon (Si) change upon oxygenation of anoxic soft bottoms in the brackish, eutrophicated Baltic Sea. Direct measurements in situ by benthic landers demonstrated that fluxes of dissolved inorganic P (DIP) from anoxic bottom sediments in the Eastern Gotland Basin are higher than previously thought (Paper I). 2. Influence of resuspension on sediment-water solute exchange and particle transport in marine environments
Sammanfattning : Marine sediments contain a large pool of nutrients, which if released would contribute to increased eutrophication, in spite of decreased nutrient loads from land and atmosphere. Resuspension is a process, which might influence the release of nutrients from the sediment to the overlying water. LÄS MER
3. On benthic fluxes of phosphorus in the Baltic Sea proper – drivers and estimates
Sammanfattning : This Thesis focuses on the exchange of phosphorus (P) across the sediment–water interface in the Baltic Sea proper, with particular attention to the influence of bioturbating macrofauna and benthic redox conditions. Benthic P fluxes have major influence on P availability in the water column, which in turn regulates growth conditions for dinitrogen fixating cyanobacteria in the Baltic proper. LÄS MER
4. In situ remediation of contaminated sediments using thin-layer capping : effectiveness in contaminant retention and ecological implications
Sammanfattning : Hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) often reside in sediment sorbed to particles, most tightly to particles with high content of organic carbon. If persistent, such pollutants can accumulate in the sediment for many years and constitute a contamination risk for sediment-living organisms and organisms at higher trophic levels, including humans. 5. Sediment remediation using activated carbon: amending knowledge gaps
Sammanfattning : Many coastal sediments have accumulated large quantities of contaminants from past anthropogenic activities and now act as a secondary emission source of legacy pollutants to coastal ecosystems. New sediment remediation strategies are needed to address widespread sediment pollution. LÄS MER
