1. Nasal Drug Delivery : In Vitro Studies on Factors Influencing Permeability and Implications on Absorption
Sammanfattning : Nasal delivery is a feasible alternative to oral or parenteral administration for some drugs because of the high permeability of the nasal epithelium, rapid drug absorption across this membrane and avoidance of hepatic first-pass metabolism. The main objective of this thesis was to investigate factors influencing the permeability of the nasal mucosa to various compounds and to evaluate implications for drug absorption via the nasal route. 2. Topical formulations, design and drug delivery : "A dive into water"
Sammanfattning : Water is a vital component regulating the properties of topical formulations and their interaction with biological barriers, such as skin and mucosa. Changing the watercontent within the frame of the pharmaceutical triangle will have a huge impact on which type of formulation, such as a cream, ointment, gel, or lotion, is formed, as well as the physical properties of the formulation. 3. Studies on a Novel Powder Formulation for Nasal Drug Delivery
Sammanfattning : Nasal administration has potential for the treatment of indications requiring a fast onset of effect or for drugs with low oral bioavailability. Liquid nasal sprays are relatively common, but can be associated with suboptimal absorption from the nasal cavity; this thesis shows that nasal absorption can be significantly enhanced with a dry powder formulation. 4. Polymer Gels as Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms : Rheological Performance and Physicochemical Interactions at the Gel-Mucus Interface for Formulations Intended for Mucosal Drug Delivery
Sammanfattning : Drug delivery to the nasal and ocular mucosa faces several obstacles. One of these is from the effective clearance mechanisms present in the nose and eye. Polymer gels with suitable rheological properties can facilitate the absorption of poorly absorbed drugs by increasing the contact time of the drug with the mucosa. LÄS MER
5. The Horizontal Ussing Chamber Method in Studies of Nasal Drug Delivery : Method Development and Applications Using Different Formulations
Sammanfattning : The results from this thesis leads to the following conclusions; HUM is a useful tool that fills a gap in the in vitro methods previously available to study nasal drug delivery. Using HUM, the pig respiratory nasal mucosa can obtain acceptable viability and retain it longer than the period of time needed for a transport experiment. LÄS MER
