1. Ethanol Production from Cellulosic Biomass by Encapsulated Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Sammanfattning : Unstable oil markets with rising environmental concerns have revived widespread interest in production of fuel ethanol from renewable materials. Cellulosic materials are abundant and prominent feedstocks for cheap ethanol production. However, due to recalcitrant structure of these materials, pretreatment is a prerequisite. LÄS MER
2. Live Single Cell Imaging and Analysis Using Microfluidic Devices
Sammanfattning : Today many cell biological techniques study large cell populations where an average estimate of individual cells’ behavior is observed. On the other hand, single cell analysis is required for studying functional heterogeneities between cells within populations. LÄS MER
3. Modelling and Degradation Characteristics of Thin-film CIGS Solar Cells
Sammanfattning : Thin-film solar cells based around the absorber material CuIn1-xGaxSe2 (CIGS) are studied with respect to their stability characteristics, and different ways of modelling device operation are investigated. Two ways of modelling spatial inhomogeneities are detailed, one fully numerical and one hybrid model. LÄS MER
4. Gene therapy in epilepsy: neuropeptides and neurotrophic factors
Sammanfattning : Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common form of epilepsy among adult patients, and the most problematic one as seizures cannot be controlled by currently available drugs in 30 % of patients. Gene therapy based on overexpression of endogenous anti-epileptic agents such as the neuropeptide galanin and the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) represents a promising new approach for treatment of TLE. 5. Acoustic manipulation of cells and microbeads in droplet microfluidics
Sammanfattning : Droplet microfluidics has emerged as a promising platform for miniaturisation of biological assays on-chip. In droplet microfluidics small water droplets (nL-pL) surrounded by an immiscible carrier oil are generated at high throughput. LÄS MER
