1. Advanced clinical MRI for better outcome in epilepsy surgery. Focusing on fMRI and prediction of verbal memory decline
Sammanfattning : Abstract Aim: The aim of the thesis was to evaluate the use of advanced MRI technology to improve results of epilepsy surgery, with focus on language and memory functions. Methods: In paper I, 25 patients with drug-resistant epilepsy were retrospectively included in the study for having been referred to high resolution 3T MRI with and without surface coils. LÄS MER
2. Enhancing neuronal inhibition by cell and gene therapy as a novel treatment for Epilepsy
Sammanfattning : Epilepsy is a family of heterogeneous and multifactorial neurological disorders, unified by the occurrence of spontaneous recurrent seizures. Overall, it affects 50 million people worldwide of all ages and genders. LÄS MER
3. Epstein-Barr virus nuclear antigen 1, Oct and Groucho/TLE in control of promoter regulation
Sammanfattning : The human herpes virus Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is carried by approximately 95% of the adult population. It can form a lifelong latent infection in the B-cells by avoiding our immune system. A latent EBV infection is usually asymptomatic but a few EBV associated cancer forms has been described (e.g. LÄS MER

5. Gene therapy in epilepsy: neuropeptides and neurotrophic factors
Sammanfattning : Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common form of epilepsy among adult patients, and the most problematic one as seizures cannot be controlled by currently available drugs in 30 % of patients. Gene therapy based on overexpression of endogenous anti-epileptic agents such as the neuropeptide galanin and the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) represents a promising new approach for treatment of TLE.
