1. Characterization and Crystallization of Anchorless Glypican-1
Sammanfattning : Glypicans are cell-surface heparan sulfate proteoglycans that regulate Wnt, Hedgehog, bone morphogenetic protein, and fibroblast growth factor signaling through their heparan sulfate chains. Recent studies have shown that glypican core proteins also have functional roles in growth factor signaling, but biochemical and structural knowledge regarding the core proteins is limited. LÄS MER
2. Regulation of human thioredoxin and glutaredoxin systems by oxidation and S-nitrosylation
Sammanfattning : The homeostasis of intracellular redox status has a crucial role in the cell survival and different processes such as DNA synthesis, gene expression, enzymatic activity, etc. This homeostasis is achieved via an intense balance between pro-oxidants and anti-oxidants. LÄS MER
3. Islet constitutive nitric oxide synthase and nitric oxide production. Modulatory effects on insulin and glucagon secretion
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to elucidate the role of nitric oxide (NO) in the transduction signalling of insulin and glucagon release by stimulating or inhibiting islet endogenous NO-production as well as by using NO donors. Insulin release stimulated by L-arginine, the substrate for constitutive NO-synthase (cNOS)-catalyzed NO-production, was increased by the selective NOS-inhibitor NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) and suppressed by the intracellular NO donor hydroxylamine. 4. Deciphering microglia plasticity in glioma
Sammanfattning : Microglia are the innate immune cells of the brain. One of the main characteristics of microglia is its extremely plasticity, which is necessary for them to deal with changing circumstances. Activation of microglia can contribute to contrasting effects by either proinflammatory, anti-inflammatory, or tumor-supportive phenotypes. LÄS MER
5. Studies on microglia in tumor biology and neurobiology
Sammanfattning : Microglia are innate immune cells that reside in the central nervous system (CNS). Their activities are critical for ensuring the correct microenvironment for brain development and for maintaining homeostasis in the brain after birth. LÄS MER
