    Sammanfattning : The reception of the American avant-garde poet, playwright, art collector and salon hostess Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) has to a wide extent taken place in an aesthetic context prior to her work’s academic and hermeneutic canonization. This thesis is in part a mapping of this transmedia reception as it is played out in a North American context in the period from her death and until today, and in part an account of Stein’s particular collaborative poetics, through which her work invites such a reception.     Sammanfattning : The dissertation has a tripartite subject: Gertrude Stein’s novel A Novel of Thank You (1926), Arne Sand’s Väderkvarnarna (1962), and the specificity of literature before an expanded field of general art production. By reading two no¬vels located within the horizon of modernism, the thesis examines how a critical discourse on the historical and aesthetic conditions of literary practice is put for¬ward through formal strategies that challenge the conventions of the modernist novel.     Sammanfattning : A departing assumption in my work is the idea about a particular kind of conflict inherent in the theatrical line, produced by its situatedness in the specific relational doubt created in the speaking, performing voice and body, a space articulated already in the written line, as writing intended to be spoken. To the inherent self-contradiction in such utterances are added the layers of conscious and unconscious intent, discrepancies and dissonances emerging in relation to those who witness the act of speaking.
