2. The economics of residual waste : policies, price discrimination, and welfare
Sammanfattning : Paper [I]: In this study, a net social cost framework is applied to provide insights on policy issues relating to the cross-border trade in waste fuel. We estimate the net social cost of using imported waste fuel in a highly efficient combined heat and power plant (CHP) in a cold climate by considering both private costs and benefits as well as external costs related to energy production, alternative waste management and fuel transport. Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of an introductory part and the following four self-contained papers:In Paper [I] we analyze the implications of social identity and self-categorization for optimal redistributive income taxation. A two-type model is supplemented by an assumption that individuals select themselves into social categories, in which norms are formed and education effort choices partly depend on these norms. Sammanfattning : Paper [I] analyses the associations between computer use in schools and at home and test scores by using TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) data for more than 900,000 fourth-graders in 2011 and 2015. 5. Essays on health, labor market behavior, and economic incentives
Sammanfattning : Paper [1] analyzes how the labor force participation changes in response to major health shocks, such as new cancer diagnoses, heart attacks, and strokes, in middle-aged to elderly Mexican couples, and how the spouses interact in their responses. The data originates from the Mexican Health and Aging Study and provides information on how couples coordinate their labor market activities in response to major health shocks. LÄS MER
