11. The National Early Warning Score (NEWS) - Testing and evaluation in a Swedish setting
Sammanfattning : BackgroundDeviating vital signs have been known to precede Serious Adverse Events (SAEs) like In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (IHCA), unplanned Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission or unexpected death for more than a decade but still the recognition of these deteriorating patients is poor. The British National Early Warning Score (NEWS) is a ‘‘track and trigger’’ scale designed to assess in-hospital patients’ vital signs and detect clinical deterioration. 12. Role of cerebral Blood Flow in Fetal Surveillance
Sammanfattning : ABSTRACT In high-risk pregnancies the chronic hypoxemic fetus redistributes its circulation to maintain the blood supply to the vital organs: brain, heart and adrenals. The aims of the studies included in this thesis were: 1) to establish reference curves for fetal cerebral venous blood velocity in normal pregnancies; 2) to determine in high-risk pregnancies the frequency of abnormal Doppler in the cerebral veins and uterine, umbilical and middle cerebral arteries and the umbilical vein and ductus venosus with correlation with adverse perinatal outcome; 3) to analyze the correlation between brain sparing and redistribution of circulation and placental vascular impedance; 4) to evaluate the correlation between brain sparing and fetal umbilical cord blood gases at birth. 13. Identification of the adult septic patient in the prehospital and emergency department setting
Sammanfattning : Sepsis is one of the most urgent conditions encountered within emergency care but is often difficult to recognize due to its non-specific presentations. One third of the patients lack the classic sign of infection; i.e. fever, and it is often not obvious that the patient suffers from an underlying infection, which is a prerequisite for sepsis. 14. Cold exposure and thermal comfort among patients in prehospital emergency care : innovation research in nursing
Sammanfattning : BackgroundPatients’ cold exposure is a neglected problem in prehospital emergency care. Cold stress increases pain and anxiety and contributes to fear and an overall sense of dissatisfaction. When left untreated, cold stress disturbs vital body functions until ultimately reaches hypothermia. LÄS MER
15. The rapid response system : effects of early identification and treatment of physiological instability
Sammanfattning : Adverse events occur to hospital patients, with potentially fatal consequences. Unfortunately, preceding warning signs are not always recognized and acted upon correctly. There exists a mismatch between patients’ needs and the resources available in general wards. LÄS MER
