16. Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Myocardial Deformation and Scarring in Coronary Artery Disease
Sammanfattning : Although improved treatments have reduced the rates of acute complications from myocardial infarction, sequelae such as heart failure and sudden death threaten the future wellbeing of those patients. Secondary prevention after myocardial infarction is related to cardiovascular risk factors and the effect of the infarct on left ventricular function. LÄS MER
17. Cardiovascular structure and function in obesity. The impact of body composition, sleep apnea and sustained weight loss
Sammanfattning : Background: Obesity is associated with disturbances in cardiovascular structure and function varying along with the degree of fatness, but the mechanisms underlying this co-variation are unclear. Short-term weight loss appears to have favourable effects on the cardiovascular system, but whether such improvements are maintained in the long run is unknown. LÄS MER
18. Cardiac function in experimental septic and non-septic conditions with special reference to the endothelin system
Sammanfattning : Myocardial depression in sepsis has been intensely investigated for the past 30 years and still poses a considerable issue in the intensive care units. Both systolic and diastolic dysfunction is implicated, correlating with severity of illness and mortality The importance of the endothelin (ET) system in normal physiology has been extensively studied. 19. Clinical characteristics and prognosis of peripartum cardiomyopathy
Sammanfattning : Background:Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is an incompletely understood disease that causes significant morbidity and mortality in many parts of the world, including Northern Nigeria. The aims of this Thesis were: [1] to determine if selenium deficiency, serum ceruloplasmin and traditional birth practices are risk factors for PPCM, in Kano, Nigeria; [2] to describe the one year survival and left ventricular reverse remodeling (LVRR) in a group of patients with PPCM from three referral hospitals in Kano, Nigeria; [3] to identify potential electrocardiographic (ECG) predictors of PPCM; and [4] to assess right ventricular systolic dysfunction (RVSD) and remodelling in a cohort of PPCM patients in Kano, Nigeria.
