  1. 36. Characterization of thioredoxin related protein of 14 kDa and its role in redox signaling

    Författare :Irina Pader; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Reversible reduction/oxidation (redox) reactions play key roles in cellular signaling pathways. Particularly cysteine residues in proteins can be modified by reactive oxygen-, nitrogen- or sulfur species (ROS, RNS, RSS), thereby altering the functions of the respective proteins. LÄS MER

  2. 37. Mechanisms underlying mitochondrial function and biogenesis : implications for type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity

    Författare :Maria H Holmström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :mitochondria;

    Sammanfattning : The ample supply of food, in conjunction with a sedentary lifestyle and certain genetic risk factors contribute to the rise in obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Reduced mitochondrial capacity for oxidative metabolism has been implicated as one possible cause of insulin resistance in several tissues; such as liver and skeletal muscle. LÄS MER

  3. 38. Skeletal muscle responses to physical activity in health and metabolic disease

    Författare :Jonathon Alexander Smith; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Sedentary lifestyles, characterised by a lack of physical activity and prolonged periods of sitting, have been linked to reductions in whole-body metabolic flexibility and the increased risk of metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes. This can be attributed, at least partially, to the direct negative effects of physical inactivity on skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity, oxidative capacity, and overall metabolic health. LÄS MER
