16. Caveolae in insulin signalling in human and rat adipocytes
Sammanfattning : The pancreatic hormone insulin is a key hormone in maintenance of metabolic homeostasis but it also exerts control on gene expression and cell growth. This thesis presents results on fhe role of caveolae in insulin signalling in human and rat adipocytes. LÄS MER
17. Statin-induced cellular effects mediated by the P2X7 receptor
Sammanfattning : Cholesterol-lowering statins have been shown to inhibit growth of different cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo. Epidemiological studies also indicate a chemopreventive effect of statins. We have investigated the effect of statins on Akt/protein kinase B signaling and their sensitizing effect of cytostatic drugs. LÄS MER
18. Insulin-like growth factor-II : cellular effects through different receptors
Sammanfattning : Insulin-like growth factor-II (IGF-II) and IGF-I are single-chain polypeptides structurally homologous to proinsulin and share similarities with insulin in functional characteristics. Cellular actions of IGF-II are generally thought to be mediated through the IGF-I or insulin receptors, but not the IGF-II receptor, which is a single chain protein, identical to the cation independent mannose 6-phosphate (M6P) receptor and responsible for lysosomal enzyme targeting and degradation of IGF-II. 19. Effects of immunosuppressive drugs on human adipose tissue metabolism
Sammanfattning : The immunosuppressive agents (IAs) rapamycin, cyclosporin A and tacrolimus, as well as glucocorticoids are used to prevent rejection of transplanted organs and to treat autoimmune disorders. Despite their desired action on the immune system, these agents have serious long-term metabolic side-effects, including dyslipidemia and new onset diabetes mellitus after transplantation. LÄS MER
20. Expression of inflammatory and insulin signaling genes in acute and chronic stress
Sammanfattning : The acute surgical stress response induces a short-term inflammatory and insulin resistant condition, commonly producing hyperglycemia, which is strongly associated to morbidity and mortality in postsurgical patients. The chronic state of renal insufficiency, on the other hand, represents a long-term stress associated with alarmingly high mortality rates, primarily due to cardiovascular complications, and is similarly related to chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance.
