  1. 1. Evolutionary innovation : Early industrial uses of genetic engineering

    Författare :Maureen McKelvey; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Biotechnology industry; Economics of innovation; Evolutionary Economics; Genentech; human growth hormone; Kabi; technological innovation; INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AREAS; TVÄRVETENSKAPLIGA FORSKNINGSOMRÅDEN;

    Sammanfattning : Based on an analysis of biological and economic theories of evol~tion, this dissertation first specifies evolutionary innovation and then uses it toanalyze early industrial uses of genetic engineering. Innovation refers totechnological innovation processes, i.e. series of innovative activitiesresulting in technical change. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Quo vadis? Insights into the determinants of evolutionary dynamics

    Författare :Alexandre Rêgo; Rike Stelkens; Dmitri Petrov; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; natural selection; selection; genetic drift; evolutionary rescue; historical contingency; adaptation; complex environments; evolutionary predictability; parallel evolution; populationsgenetik; Population Genetics;

    Sammanfattning : Predicting future evolutionary outcomes and explaining past and current patterns of biodiversity are fundamental goals in evolutionary biology. Trajectories of evolving populations are determined by evolutionary mechanisms (natural selection, mutation, genetic drift, and gene flow) and the environment in which the populations are found. 3. 3. Evolutionary trajectories of Klebsiella pneumoniae : From experimental biofilm evolution to a hospital outbreak

    Författare :Greta Zaborskytė; Linus Sandegren; Vaughn S. Cooper; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Klebsiella pneumoniae; evolution; experimental evolution; biofilms; infection; bacterial pathogens; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : Bacterial evolution is closely intertwined with our lives. As their hosts, we shape how bacteria evolve by imposing numerous selective pressures during the time bacteria spend in our bodies. As a result, they adapt in various ways to colonize us or infect us better. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Towards a sustainable automotive industry : experiences from the development of emission control systems

    Författare :David Bauner; Staffan Laestadius; Lee Schipper; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; evolutionary economics; environmental innovation; trajectories; co-evolution; Industrial engineering and economy; Industriell teknik och ekonomi;

    Sammanfattning : From the mid-1970s and on, the contribution to air pollution of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides from gasoline passenger cars in the developed world has been reduced through co-evolution of regulation and commercial introduction of catalytic emission control technology, now part of hundreds of millions of cars, trucks and buses worldwide. This dissertation is a disaggregated study of the global introduction of catalytic emission control technology as a measure to reduce local air pollution. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Deciphering molecular mechanisms in the evolution of new functions

    Författare :Hind Abdalaal; Joakim Näsvall; Paul Rainey; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Evolvability; functional trade-offs; collateral toxicity; duplication and amplification; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Microbiology; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution;

    Sammanfattning : The evolution of new genes and functions is considered to be a major contributor to biological diversity in organisms. Through de novo origination, “duplication and divergence”, and horizontal gene transfer, organisms can acquire new genetic material that can evolve to perform novel functions. LÄS MER
