6. Expression and function of IGF-I and insulin receptors in human micro- and macrovascular cells
Sammanfattning : Insulin-like growth factor and insulin are phylogenetically closely related polypeptides and have large structural and biological similarities. Low circulating insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), diabetes as well as insulin resistance have been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease, but the mechanisms involved are still not clear. 7. Endothelial dysfunction in patients with glucose abnormalities and coronary artery disease : studies of pathogenesis and treatment
Sammanfattning : Background: Type 2 diabetes is associated with endothelial dysfunction, which is characterised by the reduced bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO). This is a result of increased oxidative stress and inflammation and the synthesis of endothelium-dependent vasoconstricting factors such as endothelin-1 (ET-1) caused by hyperglycaemia, insulin resistance and dyslipidemia. 8. The Utility of Ultrasmall Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Contrast Agents for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Sammanfattning : The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the utility of the Ultrasmall Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Particle (USPIO), NC100150 Injection for assessment of macro- and microvascular morphology and function using magnetic resonance imaging. The feasibility of NC100150 Injection was tested for the following applications: Coronary angiography, Thrombus detection, Cardiac function, Myocardial perfusion, Assessment of myocardial blood volume and water exchange and finally assessment of endothelial integrity of the myocardium. 9. Genetics of complications in patients with type 2 diabetes
Sammanfattning : Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a polygenic disease caused by an interaction between genetic and environmental factors such as low physical activity, smoking, and obesity. The disease is associated with devastating chronic microvascular (nephropathy, retinopathy, and neuropathy) and macrovascular (coronary heart disease and stroke) complications. LÄS MER
10. Endothelial dysfunction in atherosclerosis and type 2 diabetes : clinical and molecular studies of the role of endothelin and arginase
Sammanfattning : Background: Atherosclerosis is a modern world scourge and the number of people worldwide diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (T2D) is on the rise, causing much morbidity and mortality. Endothelial dysfunction (ED) is an early sign of atherosclerosis and contributes to vascular complications in T2D. LÄS MER
