21. Methane production in dairy cows : individual cow variability in methane production
Sammanfattning : Enteric methane (CH4) emissions vary between individual cows, and this variation is attributed to both animal and dietary factors. In addition, measurement technique of in vivo CH4 emissions from individual animals still represents a major challenge for successful emissions mitigation strategies. LÄS MER
22. Fibrous feeds for functional fowls
Sammanfattning : Fibres are not digested by fowls, but their impact on digestive physiology, nutrient metabolism and intestinal microflora can be substantial. Analytical shortcomings have historically contributed to different notions on the significance of fibres, but modern techniques now enable us to better discriminate between various fractions of fibre and relate them with the performance of poultry. 23. Finding graze time - combining grazing with automatic milking
Sammanfattning : The introduction of automatic milking systems (AMS) within European dairy farming in the past decades has been accompanied by a decline in grazing and in time spent outdoors by dairy cows. Grazing is a natural behaviour of cattle, and the opportunity to go outdoors is often considered a component of animal welfare. LÄS MER
24. Utilisation of fibre-rich feedstuffs for pigs in Vietnam
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the chemical composition and water holding capacity (WHC) of fibrous feeds and evaluates the effects of fibre level, fibre source, particle size and enzyme supplementation on the digestibility, performance, total tract mean retention time (MRT), as well as gut development, morphology, environment and microflora of pigs. The content (g/kg dry matter, DM) of crude protein, ether extract, starch, total sugars and non-starch polysaccharides was found to vary between feedstuffs. LÄS MER
25. Preparing for life : effects of environmental choice and change during rearing on adaptability in laying hens
Sammanfattning : The importance of the early environment for later animal behaviour, health and welfare is well known. Hens (Gallus gallus domesticus) kept for egg production are exposed to various challenges and opportunities during their life time, such as relocation from a rearing to a laying facility or access to free range.
