6. Genomic and Peptidomic Characterization of the Developing Avian Brain
Sammanfattning : Chicken and Japanese quail are commonly used models in developmental and sex specific neuroendocrine research. There is relatively little known about the mechanisms behind their sex specific brain development, especially regarding the impact of the sex chromosomes (male: ZZ, female ZW) in relation to gonadal hormones. 7. Endogenous sex hormones and cardiometabolic risk factors – population-based studies within the Skaraborg Project
Sammanfattning : Cardiovascular diseases are the major contributors to mortality in Sweden and globally. Men have a higher incidence of cardiovascular diseases compared to women, until women reach the menopause. Levels of sex hormones might explain these sex differences beyond known differences in risk factors. LÄS MER
8. Sex differences in behavior and metabolism
Sammanfattning : Men and women exhibit distinct illness patterns and disparate responses to pharmacotherapies. However, there is a scarcity of preclinical studies that systematically compare the sexes. LÄS MER
9. Bone Metabolism in Men
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, the importance of the growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system and sex steroids for male bone metabolism has been investigated, and the effects of continuous low dose GH replacement in GH deficient (GHD) adults. In a population-based sample of men, positive correlations were found between bone mineral density (BMD) and IGF-I, IGF-II, IGF binding protein (IGFBP)-3 and the testosterone/sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) ratio. 10. Polymorphism in sex steroid-related genes. Effects on hormone levels and behavior
Sammanfattning : Genetic factors are important for variations between individuals with respect to most humantraits and diseases. Sex steroids are of profound importance for reproduction, metabolism, cardiovascular function and bone formation. They are potent regulators of their ownsynthesis as well as of that of other hormones, including prolactin. LÄS MER
