1. Experimental and population-based studies on colorectal cancer - Thymidine phosphorylase as a potential biomarker
Sammanfattning : Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignancies, and the only reliable treatment option for cure is surgery. Method: Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to analyze the gene expression of the enzyme thymidine phosphorylase (TP), which was related to prognostic factors (paper I, n=254), evaluated as a predictive factor (paper III, n=125), and assessed by change of treatment (paper II, n=28). 2. Esophageal and Gastroesophageal Junctional Cancer : Improving Patient selection, Treatment and Care
Sammanfattning : Esophageal cancer is the sixth most common cause of cancer-related death. Choice of surgical approach and individualized treatment is crucial. The aims of this thesis were to evaluate the introduction of minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) regarding oncological results and postoperative complications. LÄS MER
3. Esophageal- and Gastroesophageal Junctional Cancer : Aspects on Staging, Treatment and Results
Sammanfattning : Esophageal- and gastroesophageal junctional (GEJ) cancer is the sixth cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Some improvements in care are attributed to nationwide disease-specific registries, preoperative staging and increased understanding of mechanisms affecting patient selection. LÄS MER
4. Prognostic and predictive factors in colorectal cancer
Sammanfattning : Aim: The aim of the thesis was to study prognostic and predictive factors in patients treated for colorectal cancer (CRC). Method: In paper I, a retrospective comparison was made between the patients treated in 1999 (n=180) with those treated in 2004 (n=175). LÄS MER
5. Liver metastases from colorectal cancer
Sammanfattning : Introduction: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer worldwide. At diagnosis of CRC 20-25% of patients have metastatic disease. The liver is the most common metastatic site and liver metastases are detected in 25-30% of all patients. LÄS MER
