1. Forest restoration on degraded lands in Laos
Sammanfattning : Deforestation and land-use change have been, and still are, major threats to biodiversity and ecosystem services in the tropics, and forest areas are being lost at high rates in many countries in Southeast Asia, including Laos. Progress in the development and application of forest policies and programs, coupled with increasing trends to end damaging practices associated with swidden cultivation have created opportunities to restore forests. 2. Forest planning utilizing high spatial resolution data
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents planning approaches adapted for high spatial resolution data from remote sensing and evaluate whether such approaches can enhance the provision of ecosystem services from forests. The presented methods are compared with conventional, stand-level methods. LÄS MER
3. Greenhouse Gas Fluxes and Carbon Sequestration in Young Norway Spruce Stands : The Effects of Fertilization
Sammanfattning : The enormous challenge of climate change is discussed and debated today because of its major impact on life on Earth. The forests have an important role to play as the plants absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere through their photosynthesis and the growing tree retain carbon (C). LÄS MER
4. Birch Stem and Wood Traits in Genetic and Silviculture Trials in Southern Sweden
Sammanfattning : Swedish tree species of birch (silver: Betula pendula and downy: B. pubescens) are often neglected during forest management activities, resulting in low value logs. This thesis investigated birch stem characteristics and wood properties important for solid wood products, in genetics and management trials in southern Sweden. LÄS MER
5. Process development for platform chemical production from agricultural and forestry residues
Sammanfattning : As part of a bio-based economy, biorefineries are envisaged to sustainably produce platform chemicals via biochemical conversion of agricultural and forestry residues. However, supply risks, the recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass, and inhibitor formation during pretreatment impair the economic feasibility of such biorefineries. LÄS MER
