  1. 1. Importance of bacterial hydrogen sulfide in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases

    Författare :Amina Basic; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Hydrogen sulfide; Periodontitis; Gingivitis; IL-1β; IL-18; NLRP3 inflammasome; Oral microbiota; Fusobacterium spp.; Bismuth test; L-cysteine;

    Sammanfattning : Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is one of many end-products of the proteolytic activities in the subgingival microbiota in patients with periodontal diseases, such as gingivitis and periodontitis. Although H2S is generally regarded as toxic, the mechanisms that underlie its production and its effects on human cells and tissues are poorly understood. LÄS MER

  2. 2. The role of CD30 in atopic allergy

    Författare :Åsa Bengtsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :CD30; sCD30; CD30L; allergy; atopic dermatitis; T-cell clone; Th1 Th2; placenta; glutathione GSH ; N-acetyl-L-cysteine NAC ;

    Sammanfattning : The 120 kDa CD30 molecule belongs to the tumour necrosis factor (TNF) receptor superfamily and is expressed by activated lymphoid cells. Small populations of CD30+ cells have been detected in the peripheral lymphoid organs, as well as in the thymus. A subset of CD45RO+, so-called memory T cells, also express CD30 after various kind of stimuli. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Molecules and Clusters on Oxide Surfaces

    Författare :Evren Ataman; Synkrotronljusfysik; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy,and density functional theory have been used to study the fundamental interactions between model oxidesurfaces and either organic, mixed organic/inorganic, or purely inorganic adsorbate layers. As model oxidesurfaces have served the rutile TiO2(110) surface and an in-situ grown iron oxide film supported by a Pt(111)surface. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Cysteine biosynthesis in Mycobacterium tuberculosis as potential drug target

    Författare :Katharina Brunner; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the underlying cause of tuberculosis, one of the most devastating infectious diseases, causing 1.4 million deaths in 2015. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Structural basis of cysteine biosynthesis and peptidoglycan remodelling in Mycobacterium tuberculosis

    Författare :Dominic Böth; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the causative agent of tuberculosis, which is responsible for 1.3 million deaths annually. Treatment is difficult due to an elaborate defense machinery, which includes specific metabolic changes of the bacilli upon exposure to antibiotics and the immune response of the host. LÄS MER
