16. Associative Polymer-Polymer and Polymer-Surfactant Systems: Phase Behaviour and the Influence of Chemical Reactions
Sammanfattning : Aqueous mixtures of two non-ionic polymers, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and the amphiphilic triblock copolymer, (EO)27(PO)67(EO)27, known by its trade name Pluronic® P104, showed an associative phase separation (miscibility gap), which decreased with the decrease of PAA length. It was found that PAA is a much less selective “solvent” to P104 molecules than water. LÄS MER
17. 4-chlorophenol biodegradation by Arthrobacter chlorophenolicus A6
Sammanfattning : A microorganism was isolated which could grow on unusually high concentrations of the toxic pollutant 4-chlorophenol. Taxonomic studies showed that the microorganism constituted a novel species within the genus Arthrobacter and it was named Arthrobacter chlorophenolicus A6. A. LÄS MER
18. Complexation between hydrophobically modified polymers and amylose. Gelation and competition by surfactants
Sammanfattning : Aqueous mixtures of hydrophobically modified polymers (HMP) with amylose have been investigated by rheology and 1H NMR. Amylose can cross-link HMP chains by forming single-helical inclusion complexes with the hydrophobic side chains of the HMP, leading to thermoreversible, elastic, and thixotropic gels at ambient temperatures. 19. Development of a new PNA analogue as a potential antisense drug and tool for life-science studies
Sammanfattning : The work described in this thesis focuses on applying synthetic organic chemistry methods (supported by modem synthesizers and analytical techniques) for the preparation of peptides and modified nucleic acids in order to affect certain properties in these biomolecules, which can lead to their application as drugs and/or tools for life sciences studies. The first part of the thesis reports the design and synthesis of a novel pyrrolidine-based peptide nucleic acid (PNA). LÄS MER
20. Pharmaceutical insights into improving oligonucleotide delivery and efficacy
Sammanfattning : The power of gene therapy lies in their capacity to target a disease on a genetic level. Nucleic acid containing therapeutics can be utilized to treat, diagnose or prevent a possible disease or condition. However, the successful delivery of such molecules constitutes a major limitation.
