  1. 51. The global marine carbon system through time

    Författare :Jenny Hieronymus; Jonas Nycander; Gösta Walin; Michael Follows; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Sammanfattning : Carbon dioxide is an important greenhouse gas and in order to understand its effect on the climate we need to identify its sources and sinks. This thesis focuses on different aspects of the marine carbon system and the exchange of carbon between the ocean and the atmosphere. LÄS MER

  2. 52. In situ remediation of contaminated sediments using thin-layer capping : efficiency in contaminant retention and ecological implications

    Författare :Göran S. Samuelsson; Jonas S. Gunnarsson; Bart Koelmans; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Contaminated Sediment Remediation; Activated Carbon; Benthic Community; Ecological Effects; Stress; Resilience; Contaminant Sequestration; Capping Efficiency; Bioavailability; Bioaccumulation; Sediment-to-water fluxes; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Sammanfattning : Hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) often reside in sediments sorbed to particles, most tightly to particles with high content of organic carbon. If persistent, such pollutants can accumulate in the sediment for many years and constitute a contamination risk for sediment-living organisms and organisms at higher trophic levels, including humans. 3. 53. From alpha to beta ocean: Exploring the role of surface buoyancy fluxes and seawater thermal expansion in setting the upper ocean stratification

    Författare :Romain Caneill; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ocean stratification; Thermal expansion coefficient; Buoyancy fluxes; Transition zone; Alpha – beta ocean;

    Sammanfattning : The ocean plays a central role in the climate system by absorbing excess anthropogenic heat and carbon dioxide. Moreover, the ocean circulation distributes heat from the tropics towards the poles. Due to the large ocean stratification, vertical exchanges between the ocean interior and the surface are limited. 4. 54. Novel approaches in modeling of soil carbon : Upscaling theories and energetics

    Författare :Arjun Chakrawal; Stefano Manzoni; Hyun-Seob Song; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Microorganisms; soil C cycling; spatial heterogeneity; energetics; thermodynamics; microbial metabolism; calorespirometric ratio; microbial traits; heat dissipation; microscale; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Sammanfattning : Soils contain more carbon (C) than terrestrial (above ground) and atmospheric carbon combined. Mismanagement of soil C could lead to increased greenhouse gas emissions, whereas practices leading to increased C storage would help mitigate climate change while improving soil fertility and ecological functions. 5. 55. Nutrient dynamics in the North Pacific subtropical gyre : phosphorus fluxes in the upper oligotrophic ocean

    Författare :Karin Björkman; Tom Berman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : In the contemporary North Pacific subtropical gyre (NPSG) the extant microbial community is based on prokaryotic cells with the cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus dominating the phototrophic component. The prevalence of dinitrogen (N2) fixing organisms, such as Trichodesmium spp. LÄS MER
