  1. 1. Anthropogenic impact on predator guilds and ecosystem processes : Apex predator extinctions, land use and climate change

    Författare :Marianne Pasanen Mortensen; Bodil Elmhagen; Francisco Palomares; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mesopredators; apex predators; top-down; bottom-up; interspecific killing; red fox; Eurasian lynx; grey wolf; wolverine; productivity; winter severity; cropland; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Humans affect ecosystems by changing species compositions, landscape and climate. This thesis aims to increase our understanding of anthropogenic effects on mesopredator abundance due to changes in apex predator status, landscape and climate. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Population History and Non-invasive Monitoring : Use of low copy number DNA in Conservation Genetics

    Författare :Øystein Flagstad; Ettore Randi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; genetic tagging; immigration; loss of genetic variability; non-invasive molecular techniques; population decline; Swayne’s hartebeest; wolf; wolverine; Biologi; Biology; Biologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Sammanfattning : Conservation genetics research is increasingly becoming an integrated part of the management of small and endangered populations. In this thesis I developed tools for genetic analysis of low copy number sources of DNA, such as old teeth from museum specimens as well as field-collected faeces and urine. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Sociality in a solitary carnivore, the wolverine

    Författare :Fredrik Dalerum; Anders Angerbjörn; Kyran Kunkel; Stanley Boutin; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sociality; carnivore; behaviour; ecology; spatial organisation; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The social organization of animal societies has important implications for several fields of biology, from managing wild populations to developing new ecological and evolutionary theory. Although much attention has been given to the formation and maintenance of societies of group living individuals, less is known about how societies of solitary individuals have been shaped and maintained. 4. 4. Wolverine ecology and conservation in the Western United States

    Författare :Robert Michael Inman; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Successful conservation of rare species requires an understanding of the niche, knowledge of the scale over which a viable population exists, and a system that provides adequate funding to take the necessary actions. I radio-marked wolverines in the Yellowstone Ecosystem and examined spatial ecology and reproductive chronology from an evolutionary perspective to better define the wolverine niche. LÄS MER

  5. 5. 'O neighbour, where art thou?' : spatial and social dynamics in wolverine and lynx, from individual space use to population distribution

    Författare :Malin Aronsson; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : The organisation of individuals in space and time influences population structure and dynamics, and is important for our understanding of animal ecology. The aim of this thesis is to gain an increased understanding of the mechanisms driving the abundance and distribution of solitary carnivores, from individual space use to population-level distribution.
