11. Fish coping with stress-Physiology and behaviour in salmonids with focus on stress coping styles, rearing conditions and smolt migration
Sammanfattning : When animals are reared for conservational releases it is paramount to avoid reducing genetic and phenotypic variation over time. Therefore, an understanding of how behavioural and physiological traits affect the performance of an individual both within the captive and the wild environment is required. LÄS MER
12. Effects of deep excavations in soft clay on the immediate sourroundings-Analysis of the possibility to predict deformations and reactions against the retaining system
Sammanfattning : When excavating in an urban environment, the evaluation of the magnitude and distribution of ground movements is an important part of the design process, since excessive movements can damage adjacent buildings and utilities. In order to minimize movement of the surrounding soil, a retaining wall support system is used for deep excavations to provide lateral support. LÄS MER
13. Neuroendocrinology of agonostic interaction and social signalling in Artic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) : Studies on the neuroendocrine regulation of aggressive behaviour, stress responses and skin colour
Sammanfattning : This thesis shows that socially subordinate Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) display elevated brain serotonergic (5-HT) and norepinephric activity along with a chronic activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis, including elevated plasma concentrations of á-MSH. Furthermore, subordinate fish showed an inhibition of aggressive behaviour and darker body coloration, skin darkness being positively correlated with plasma á-MSH. LÄS MER
14. Thin metal films on weakly-interacting substrates : Nanoscale growth dynamics, stress generation, and morphology manipulation
Sammanfattning : Vapor-based growth of thin metal films with controlled morphology on weakly-interacting substrates (WIS), including oxides and van der Waals materials, is essential for the fabrication of multifunctional metal contacts in a wide array of optoelectronic devices. Achieving this entails a great challenge, since weak film/substrate interactions yield a pronounced and uncontrolled 3D morphology. LÄS MER
15. Stress, Drugs and Neuroscience : Neurobiological Effects of Social Stressors and Drug Exposure in Young and Adolescent Rats
Sammanfattning : Experiences early in life or during adolescence modulate neuronal networks in the immature brain and consequently lay the foundation for future susceptibility or resilience towards psychiatric disorders. The objective in this thesis is to understand, in part, how the surrounding environment shapes the brain of a young individual. LÄS MER
