1. Cervical screening with primary HPV : from research to clinical effectiveness
Sammanfattning : Organized cervical screening has greatly reduced the incidence of cervical cancer where implemented. Human papilloma virus (HPV) is the cause of cervical cancer, and in later years, convincing evidence has led to cervical screening with HPV as the primary method being implemented around the world. 2. Pattern Recognition Methods for Oral Lesion Classification using Digital Color Images
Sammanfattning : The present thesis addresses the development and application of pattern recognition methods for classification of oral lesions using digital color images as input. The human oral cavity is a site of numerous diseases and two of the common and visually similar lesions are oral leukoplakia and oral lichenoid reactions. LÄS MER
3. The battleground of two Infections and a cancer: Human Papilloma Virus, premalignant lesions of the cervix and their interaction with Human Immunodeficiency Virus in southwestern Nigeria
Sammanfattning : Background: The highest numbers of HIV-infected women are in sub- Saharan Africa, where the natural progression of HIV disease in the absence of treatment results in death before the onset of invasive cervical cancer. With improved access to treatment, several studies outside West Africa demonstrated an increased risk of pre-invasive cervical lesions among HIV-infected women and the positive impact of treatment on the outcome. 4. Prevention of cervical cancer through use of liquid-based cytology and supplementary HPV testing in population-based screening
Sammanfattning : The aim of this project is to evaluate an alternative screening strategy using liquid- based cytology (LBC), and supplementary detection of human papillomavirus (HPV) in cases of minor cytological abnormalities (atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance, ASCUS, and low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion, LSIL). Within population-based screening in Stockholm, Sweden, we alternated screening using LBC with supplementary HPV testing in ASCUS and LSIL (LBC+HPV testing, using Linear Array HPV genotyping Assay, Roche diagnostics) and conventional cytology (CC), from September 2005 to December 2006. 5. Suggested next steps to prevent cervical cancer after surgical treatment for high-grade cervical dysplasia
Sammanfattning : The risk of cervical cancer among women treated for high-grade cervical dysplasia is more than twofold compared with the general population, and this risk remains elevated for over two decades. In Sweden, cervical cancer incidence is rising again and the risk of cervical cancer among women with a prior history of high-grade cervical dysplasia has increased since the 1960s. LÄS MER
