6. Disease, Death, and Displacement : The long-term effects of early-life conditions on income, education, and health in Sweden, 1937-2011
Sammanfattning : How are people’s lives shaped by what they experience during infancy, childhood, and adolescence? How are their adult lives impacted by a sudden improvement or worsening in their early-life conditions?This dissertation aims at providing some insights about how specific changes in early-life conditions can affect individuals’ lives in the long-term. It focuses on three very different shocks to early-life conditions: (1) exposure to disease and vaccination, studied through the case of polio and the vaccine against it, (2) experiencing forced migration, studied through the case of Yugoslavian refugees in Sweden, and (3) losing a parent during the childhood years. 8. Vaccine responses after chemotherapy or stem cell transplantation in patients with hematological malignancies
Sammanfattning : The prevention of infections in patients with hematological malignancies is important given the inherent immune deficiency associated with these diseases and the immunosuppressive effects of treatment. This thesis investigated the efficacy of vaccines against various pathogens among patients with hematological disease receiving chemotherapy or stem cell transplantation, including the longevity of vaccine responses. 9. Physical performance, pain and pool exercise in individuals with late effects of polio
Sammanfattning : The overall purpose of the studies was to obtain knowledge about physical performance and related factors in individuals with late effects of polio. The specific aims were to provide a description of pain and how it is related to the effects of polio and the physical activity of the individual; to evaluate physical performance, the effect of reduced muscle strength on walking performance, and to study the impact of pool exercise. 10. The post-polio syndrome : studies of immunology and immunomodulatory intervention
Sammanfattning : Late effects in patients with prior poliomyelitis were first reported in the nineteenth century and have been referred to as the post-polio syndrome (PPS). PPS is characterized by new muscular deterioration, fatigue and pain after a stable period of at least 15 years. LÄS MER
