    Sammanfattning : This licentiate thesis consists of two separate studies on educational attainment and returns to education. The first paper, “Ethnic Segregation and Educational Attainment in Sweden”, studies whether youths brought up in ethnically segregated neighbourhoods differ in educational attainment from youths brought up in more affluent neighbourhoods, after controlling for family characteristics.     Sammanfattning : A growing body of results indicate that immunological alterations and oxidative stress are of importance in various mental disorders. The inflammatory changes are possible to detect both in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and different psychiatric disorder exhibit similar changes indicating a common underlying mechanism.     Sammanfattning : Increasing the share of biomass, preferably by replacing fossil fuels, is one way to mitigate the present climate change. Fossil coal can be directly replaced by co-combustion of coal and biomass and fossil engine fuels (gasoline and diesel) could potentially partly be replaced by synthetic renewable fuels produced via entrained flow gasification of biomass.
