  1. 21. Development of multi-cellular human lung models to study inflammatory mechanisms and cell-cell interactions

    Författare :Jie Ji; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : It is well known that exposure to toxicants in the environment is associated with a wide range of health effects. The airway epithelium which forms the first line of defense, plays critical roles in the defence against inhaled particles, pathogens and toxic agents. LÄS MER

  2. 22. Regenerative medicine of the airway cartilage : a morphological and immunohistochemical study with focus on cricoid cartilage defects treated with BMP-2

    Författare :Ion Tcacencu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Larynx; growth factor; wound healing; perichondrium; progenitor cells; osteogenesis; growth plate.;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Cartilage provides flexible support for upper airway. Induction of cartilage healing is required for the success of many surgical interventions in the head and neck that are used as treatments for several diseases, such as subglottic stenosis and tumors of the larynx and thyroid. 3. 23. Carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons : theoretical, molecular, in vitro and cellular characterization of biotransformation and DNA damage

    Författare :Kristian Dreij; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread mutagenic and carcinogenic environmental pollutants, which require metabolic activation to electrophilic intermediates and subsequent covalent binding to critical targets in DNA to elicit their biological activity. Bayand fjord-region diol epoxides (DEs) have been identified as the ultimate mutagenic and carcinogenic metabolites of PAHs. LÄS MER

  4. 24. Breast-feeding, nasopharyngeal colonization and otitis media

    Författare :Gustaf Aniansson; immunologi och glykobiologi - MIG Avdelningen för mikrobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cleft palate.; URI; SOM; AOM; otitis media; H. influenzae; S. pneumoniae; Breast-feeding; nasopharyngeal colonization; Immunology; serology; transplantation; Immunologi; serologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis analyzed the relationship between breastfeeding, nasopharyngeal colonization and acute otitis media (AOM) in children. Nasopharyngeal cultures were collected from 400 children and milk samples from their mothers in connection with the scheduled visits to well baby clinics at 1-3, 4-7 and 8-12 months of age, and episodes of AOM and URI were documented. 5. 25. Interactions between neural retina, retinal epithelium and choroid

    Författare :Lena Ivert; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :RPE; neural retina; basal lamina; Bruch s membrane; choroid; subretinal space; bleb detachment; ICG; FAG; SLO; choroidal blood flow.;

    Sammanfattning : The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a non-replicating monolayer that plays a key role nursing the photoreceptors of the neural retina, regulating fluid movement within the subretinal space, maintaining a basal laminar layer of Bruch s membrane, and influencing the choriocapillaris. This project investigates how surgical manipulation of the retinal epithelial layer influences the neural retina, the choroid and the epithelial layer itself. LÄS MER
