  1. 1. Interactions between neural retina, retinal epithelium and choroid

    Författare :Lena Ivert; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :RPE; neural retina; basal lamina; Bruch s membrane; choroid; subretinal space; bleb detachment; ICG; FAG; SLO; choroidal blood flow.;

    Sammanfattning : The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a non-replicating monolayer that plays a key role nursing the photoreceptors of the neural retina, regulating fluid movement within the subretinal space, maintaining a basal laminar layer of Bruch s membrane, and influencing the choriocapillaris. This project investigates how surgical manipulation of the retinal epithelial layer influences the neural retina, the choroid and the epithelial layer itself. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) : clinical and experimental aspects

    Författare :Lennart Berglin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :CNV; angiogenesis; age-related macular degeneration; AMD; aging; surgery; endothelial cells; VEGF; MMP; TIMP; MMP-2; immunohistochemistry; ECM; RPE; Bruch s membrane; wound healing; inflammation; macrophages; in-situ hybridization; mRNA; immature vessels; MMP-9; TIMP- 3; MMP-2 deficiency;

    Sammanfattning : This work comprises different aspects of choroidal neovacularization (CNV); a leading cause of visual loss in the aged. It is an example of angiogenesis and a complication of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) The purpose was to study if patient age influences outcome of CNV surgery, to characterize the cellular content of CNV, to analyze the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and various matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) and their inhibitors (TIMP) in CNV and to study if MMP-2 influences experimental CNV growth. 3. 3. Retinal pigment epithelial cells, oxidative stress and lipofuscin : relation to age-related macular degeneration

    Författare :Staffan Sundelin; Stefan Seregard; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Sammanfattning : In developed countries, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of loss of central vision in people over the age of 65. The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) appears to be the site of early pathological changes in AMD. LÄS MER
