36. Basal boundary conditions, stability and verification in glaciological numerical models
Sammanfattning : To increase our understanding of how ice sheets and glaciers interact with the climate system, numerical models have become an indispensable tool. However, the complexity of these systems and the natural limitation in computational power is reflected in the simplifications of the represented processes and the spatial and temporal resolution of the models. 37. Diffuse-Interface Simulations of Capillary Phenomena
Sammanfattning : Fluid flows mainly driven by capillary forces are presented in this thesis. By means of modeling and simulations, interesting dynamics in capillary-driven flows are revealed such as coalescences, breakups, precursor films, flow instabilities, rapid spreading, rigid body motions, and reactive wetting. 38. Numerical modeling of fluid flow and solute transport in rock fractures
Sammanfattning : This study focuses on numerical modeling of fluid flow and solute transport in rough-walled rock fractures and fracture-matrix systems, with the main aim to investigate the impacts of fracture surface roughness on flow and transport processes in rock fractures. Both 2D and 3D fracture models were built from laser-scanned surface tomography of a real granite rock sample, to consider realistic features of surface tomography and potential asperity contacts. 39. Analysis of Adaptive Finite Element Methods
Sammanfattning : This thesis is concerned with the analysis and design of adaptive finite element methods for a variety of differential equations in mechanics and physics, including linear and semilinear elliptic equations, eigenvalue problems, the stationary Navier-Stokes equations, and Hamiltonian systems. The analysis focuses on sharp a posteriori error estimates, sharp a priori error estimates, stability properties, and the design of adaptive algorithms. LÄS MER
40. Numerical Computations with Fundamental Solutions
Sammanfattning : Two solution strategies for large, sparse, and structured algebraic systems of equations are considered. The first strategy is to construct efficient preconditioners for iterative solvers. The second is to reduce the sparse algebraic system to a smaller, dense system of equations, which are called the boundary summation equations. LÄS MER
