16. Using Molecular Dynamics Simulations to Explore Critical Property Relationships in Polymer Electrolytes : Polarity, Coordination, Ionic transport, Ion-pairing, and Ion-ion Correlations
Sammanfattning : While ion transport in solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) has been explored for decades, there still remains controversies about its fundamental properties, often correlated with gaps between experimental and computational studies. Using molecular dynamics simulations to understand the complex transport mechanisms and also to fill these gaps is the main goal of this thesis. LÄS MER
17. Scaling up solar photovoltaic use : A system-oriented assessment of experiences gained in deployment
Sammanfattning : The transition towards low-carbon energy systems undeniably requires a strong scale-up in the diffusion of renewable energy technologies globally. Given its theoretical and techno-economic potential, solar photovoltaics (PV) is considered an important option. LÄS MER
18. Experimental Study of De-icing Salt-frost Scaling in Concrete with Low-calcium Fly Ash or Slag : Influence of Drying and Carbonation, and Air Content
Sammanfattning : In order to reduce the net climate impact of concrete production, it is necessary for the industry to undertake several actions. Among these is to include fly ash and slag as supplementary cementitious materials. Accordingly, this project has studied concrete containing low-calcium fly ash or ground-granulated blast-furnace slag. LÄS MER
19. Lateral mixing of solids in bubbling fluidized beds – experimental quantification
Sammanfattning : For solid fuels, thermochemical conversion processes such as combustion and gasification are especially suitable to be carried out in fluidized bed units because of the relatively high mixing rates, fuel flexibility and the possibility to use active bed material to enhance process efficiency. Fuels such as biomass and waste, which are commonly used in fluidized beds, are characterized by volatile contents much higher than what is found in fossil fuels such as coal. LÄS MER
20. Fluid Governance : Scalar politics in the South African waterscape
Sammanfattning : This thesis offers a critical analysis of the scaling of water governance in South Africa and its implications for water access and allocation. As the complexity and severity of environmental problems increases, there is a growing tendency to look to environmental governance to offer solutions. LÄS MER
