21. Prostaglandin E2 as mediator and modulator of airway smooth muscle responses
Sammanfattning : Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is a lipid mediator produced by virtually every cell of the human body. Because common non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) inhibit its biosynthesis, PGE2 is usually considered to be a ‘pro-inflammatory’ mediator. The role of PGE2 in the lung and airways has however always been unclear. LÄS MER
22. Airway responses to NO2 and allergen in asthmatics
Sammanfattning : Nitrogen dioxide (N02), a gas produced by combustion, is a common environmental air pollutant. Individuals with asthma are more sensitive to N02 exposure than healthy subjects, according to results from controlled human-exposure studies. N02 can enhance the asthmatic response to inhaled allergen. LÄS MER
23. Neutrophil subsets in airway inflammation and hyperreactivity
Sammanfattning : Neutrophils are part of the first lines of defence against invading microbes. They play an essential role in antimicrobial host defence by recognizing microorganisms through the various receptors that can be expressed on their surfaces. LÄS MER
24. Modelling transport of non-spherical particles in laminar flow
Sammanfattning : A model has been developed that can be used to predict the transport of non-spherical particles in the nano- and micro scale range for different applications. This may be the flow in the lungs or flow taking place during composites manufacturing, but the model can be applied to many applications where the particle Stokes and Reynolds numbers are small. 25. Nasal and bronchial testing as well as treatment of patients with airway hyperresponsiveness and inflammation focusing on the united airway concept
Sammanfattning : Allergic and non-allergic rhinitis and asthma is a global health problem on the increase that causes major illness and disability worldwide, and also results in a large financial burden on society. This thesis contains six papers, based on four different clinical studies on humans with allergic as well as non-allergic airways inflammation, such as neutrophil inflammation caused by exposure to swine dust, as well as chronic rhinosinusitis and concomitant asthma with and without NSAID intolerance.
