  1. 6. Gamma Spectroscopy and Gamma Emission Tomography for Fuel Performance Characterization of Irradiated Nuclear Fuel Assemblies

    Författare :Scott Holcombe; Staffan Jacobsson Svärd; Hans-Urs Zwicky; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nuclear fuel performance; Nuclear fuel assemblies; Gamma emission tomography; Gamma spectroscopy;

    Sammanfattning : Gamma spectroscopy and gamma emission tomography are two non-destructive measurement techniques for assessing the performance of nuclear fuel which have been investigated in this thesis for existing and novel applications through theoretical studies and experimental demonstrations. For assessment of individual fuel rods using gamma spectroscopy, fuel assemblies are dismantled so that the fuel rods may be measured separately, which is time-consuming and may cause damage to the fuel. 2. 7. Enhancing the performance of the Digital Cherenkov Viewing Device : Detecting partial defects in irradiated nuclear fuel assemblies using Cherenkov light

    Författare :Erik Branger; Sophie Grape; Christopher Orton; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; DCVD; Nuclear safeguards; Cherenkov light; Nuclear fuel assembly; Partial defect verification; Fysik med inriktning mot tillämpad kärnfysik; Physics with specialization in Applied Nuclear Physics;

    Sammanfattning : The Digital Cherenkov Viewing Device (DCVD) is an instrument used by authority safeguards inspectors to verify irradiated nuclear fuel assemblies in wet storage based on Cherenkov light emission. It is frequently used to verify that parts of an assembly have not been diverted, which is done by comparing the measured Cherenkov light intensity to a predicted one. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Developments toward a novel methodology for spent nuclear fuel verification

    Författare :Moad al-Dbissi; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nuclear safeguards; partial defect; neutron scintillator; flux gradient detector; machine learning; spent nuclear fuel; artificial neural networks;

    Sammanfattning : One of the tasks in nuclear safeguards is to regularly inspect spent nuclear fuel discharged from nuclear power reactors and verify the integrity of it, so that illegal removal and diversion of radioactive material can be promptly discovered. In the current project, which is a collaboration between Chalmers University of Technology and SCK CEN, a novel methodology for non-intrusive inspection of spent nuclear fuel is under development. 4. 9. Effective Spatial Mapping for Coupled Code Analysis of Thermal–Hydraulics/Neutron–Kinetics of Boiling Water Reactors

    Författare :Joanna Peltonen; Weimin Ma; Maria Avramova; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Boiling Water Reactor; RELAP5; TRACE; PARCS; Coupled TH NK analysis; Spatial Mapping; Turbine Trip; Feedwater Transient; Control Rod Drop; Reactor Stability; Hierarchical Clustering; kokvattenreaktor; reaktoranalys; RELAP5; TRACE; PARCS; TH NK analys; turbin tripp; matarvatten transient; fallande styrstav; reaktor stabilitet; hierarkisk klustringsmetodik; SRA - Energy; SRA - Energi;

    Sammanfattning : Analyses of nuclear reactor safety have increasingly required coupling of full three dimensional neutron kinetics (NK) core models with system transient thermal–hydraulics (TH) codes.  In order to produce results within a reasonable computing time, the coupled codes use two different spatial description of the reactor core. 5. 10. Applications of Gamma Ray Spectroscopy of Spent Nuclear Fuel for Safeguards and Encapsulation

    Författare :Christofer Willman; Ane Håkansson; Henrik Nylén; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Nuclear physics; gamma radiation; spectroscopy; spent nuclear fuel; safeguards; HRGS; MOX; Kärnfysik;

    Sammanfattning : Nuclear energy is currently one of the world’s main sources of electricity. Closely connected to the use of nuclear energy are important issues such as the nonproliferation of fissile material that may potentially used in nuclear weapons (safeguards), and the management of the highly radioactive nuclear waste.
