  1. 11. Molecular and clinical sexual dimorphism in systemic autoimmunity

    Författare :Jorge Iván Ramírez Sepúlveda; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Biological differences between the sexes of a species, also known as sexual dimorphism, can be found throughout developmental, physiological and pathological processes. In human disease, sexual dimorphism can explain marked differences in disease susceptibility. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Evolutionary ecology of newts

    Författare :Jan C. Malmgren; Hanna Kokko; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; evolution; adaptation; amphibians; salamanders; predation; migration; sexual dimorphism; sex differences; behaviour; conservation; Biology; Biologi; Biologi med ekologisk inriktning;

    Sammanfattning : Sexual dimorphism, predator avoidance and migratory behaviour are adaptive traits that show variation at the population and species level. Such features respond to the environment in the broad sense, that is, when both abiotic and biotic components are included. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Metapopulations dynamics and sex-specific resource allocation in Silene dioica

    Författare :Elisabet Peedu; Pär Ingvarsson; Barbara Giles; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Silene dioica; Skeppvik Archipelago; Metapopulation Dynamics; Population Genetic Structuring; Genetic Diversity; Gene Flow; Sex-Specific Resource Allocation; Cost of Reproduction; Life-History Theory; Sexual Dimorphism; Reproductive Effort; biology; biologi; evolutionär genetik; evolutionary genetics; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Sammanfattning : Rising archipelagos provide unique settings for the study of the temporal and spatial dynamics of their biota. This offers the possibility to study the ecology and genetics of early successional processes; both between islands that differ in age and within islands when already established organisms have to keep pace with the changing environment. 4. 14. Morphological antipredator adaptations in water fleas

    Författare :Hans Lord; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Body drag; Daphnia cristata; Reynolds number; viscosity; zooplankton; Bosmina; swimming velocity; cyclomorphosis; sexual dimorphism; head area; helmet angle; trophic condition; allometry; invertebrate predator; fish;

    Sammanfattning : Some Bosmina and Daphnia species have the ability to develop extreme morphological antipredator defences, such as long antennules, high carapaces and helmets. The relative sizes of these plastic traits may differ substantially between populations, and also between individuals within a population, between sexes and during ontogeny. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Seeing the invisible: Evolution of wing interference patterns in Hymenoptera, and their application in taxonomy

    Författare :Ekaterina Shevtsova; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chalcidoidea; parasitic wasps; structural colors; visual signaling; cryptic species; sexual dimorphism; wing membrane thickness; wing micro-morphology; wing cuticle ultrastructure;

    Sammanfattning : The remarkably thin transparent wing membranes in tiny wasps may appear to have a simple structural design, but hide a largely unexplored complex of micro-morphological features that serve aerodynamics and may also function in visual signaling. I found that when such small transparent wings are viewed against a dark background they display vivid structural color patterns due to thin film interference, and named them Wing Interference Patterns (WIPs).
