  1. 6. Regulation of proton-coupled electron transfer in cytochrome c oxidase : The role of membrane potential, proton pathways and ATP

    Författare :Markus Björck; Peter Brzezinski; Thorsten Friedrich; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cytochrome c oxidase; charge transfer; membrane potential; membrane protein; mitochondria; ATP; proton pump; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Sammanfattning : Cytochrome c oxidase (CytcO) is the final electron acceptor of the respiratory chain. In this chain a current of electrons, derived from degradation of nutrients, along with protons, are used to reduce oxygen to water. The reaction is exergonic and the excess energy is used to pump protons across the membrane. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Synthesis of Biomimetic Systems for Proton and Electron Transfer Reactions in the Ground and Excited State

    Författare :Giovanny A. Parada; Sascha Ott; Ana Moore; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Solar energy conversion; artificial photosynthesis; hydrogen bonds; excited state intramolecular proton transfer; tautomerization; proton-coupled electron transfer; photosensitizer; ruthenium complex.; Chemistry with specialization in Organic Chemistry; Kemi med inriktning mot organisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : A detailed understanding of natural photosynthesis provides inspiration for the development of sustainable and renewable energy sources, i.e. a technology that is capable of converting solar energy directly into chemical fuels. This concept is called artificial photosynthesis. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Trapping Tyrosine Z : Exploring the Relay between Photochemistry and Water Oxidation in Photosystem II

    Författare :Johannes Sjöholm; Stenbjörn Styring; Fikret Mamedov; A. William Rutherford; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Photosystem II; Tyrosine Z; EPR; proton-coupled electron transfer; hydrogen bond; pH;

    Sammanfattning : Photosystem II is unique! It remains the only enzyme that can oxidize water using light as energy input. Water oxidation in photosystem II is catalyzed by the CaMn4 cluster. The electrons extracted from the CaMn4 cluster are transferred to P680+ via the tyrosine residue D1-Tyr161 (YZ). LÄS MER

  4. 9. Studies of the two redox active tyrosines in Photosystem II

    Författare :Nigar Ahmadova; Fikret Mamedov; Stenbjörn Styring; Robert Burnap; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Photosystem II; Tyrosine Z and D; proton-coupled electron transfer;

    Sammanfattning : Photosystem II is a unique enzyme which catalyzes light induced water oxidation. This process is driven by highly oxidizing ensemble of four Chl molecules, PD1, PD2, ChlD1 and ChlD2 called, P680. Excitation of one of the Chls in P680 leads to the primary charge separation, P680+Pheo-. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Hydrogen Bonded Phenols as Models for Redox-Active Tyrosines in Enzymes

    Författare :Josefin Utas; Björn Åkermark; Helena Grennberg; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; electron transfer; photosystem II; radicals; imidazole; hydrogen bonding; Organic chemistry; Organisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the impact of hydrogen bonding on the properties of phenols. The possibility for tyrosine to form hydrogen bonds to other amino acids has been found to be important for its function as an electron transfer mediator in a number of important redox enzymes.
